MISSION
Masawa has launched the first Nurture Capital fund to invest in early-stage European founders catalyzing mental health and wellness.
By investing in innovations addressing mental illness, mental wellness, and their social determinants, Masawa is at the forefront of seizing an ever-growing investment opportunity, currently €400B, while tackling a global societal issue. In current due diligence are for example companies operating in the fields of mental health + nutrition, gaming, cancer treatment, remote monitoring & wearables, dementia, education, online bullying / youth suicide, precision psychiatry and SaMD for practitioners.
As 65% of startup failure is attributable to human conflict, the Masawa Nurture Capital approach minimizes human capital risk and enhances founder and team wellbeing, while repurposing capital and adding 1.5x to financial and social outcomes.
OUR NURTURE CAPITAL APPROACH - LEVERAGING PRINCIPLES OF STEWARD-OWNERSHIP:
The current Nurture Capital elements include:
1. Leadership + Culture Focus: Masawa co-designs a bespoke development path tailored to founders’ unique needs, from which they can improve their wellbeing, leadership effectiveness, and team resilience.
2. Soft Landing Package: For unsuccessful or transitioning founders, Masawa offers a mental health package to help with closure to get them back on their feet and back to innovating.
3. Impact Accountability: 50% of Masawa's GP carry is tied to external impact targets co-created with founders.
4. Founder Solidarity: 10% of Masawa's GP carry is reserved for founders.
5. Masawa Foundation: Tax-beneficial donations (currently for US and German tax residents/entities) are treated as investment capital in the fund and/or support Nurture Capital activities, which could reduce overall management fees.
6. GP Carry Cap: Masawa's GP carry earned above a multiple of 4x on invested capital at portfolio level goes to the Masawa Foundation, collectively managed by the Masawa team, advisors, and selected LPs and investees.
